Child Safe Environments And Reports Of Sexual Abuse

A Georgia woman pled guilty to two counts of child molestation and will spend 16 years in prison and four years in probation.

The woman worked as a special education teacher at an area high school. She resigned her position following an investigation by school administration into inappropriate texts she sent to a student.

According to police, authorities arrested the teacher in March of this year, then rearrested her in May for violating her bond agreement by continuing to pursue a sexual relationship with the student. Commentary and Checklist

Administrators should regularly review procedures for receiving and investigating reports of misconduct to make certain they are managed effectively. Any allegation of sexual abuse of a minor should be forwarded immediately to the police or to the local child protection agency.

Educators are mandatory reporters. Failure to report can lead to prosecution.

The following suggestions will help you assist with your development of a safe educational environment for children:

  • Have written child protection policies and procedures. Include a policy on digital communications.?
  • Train everyone in the school community on child sexual abuse prevention. ?
  • Make sure everyone in the school community, including students, has multiple reporting methods available.
  • Take seriously every reports of suspected or witnessed sexual misconduct.
  • Make sure employees understand that they are considered mandatory reporters, and thus have a legal and personal responsibility to immediately report child sexual abuse they witness, or which is reported to them, to local law enforcement or to the local child protection agency.
